State microbiologist Lauren Wold inoculates cell cultures with respiratory samples from a patient in order to detect influenza viruses. The state-run Viral and Rickettsial Diseases Laboratory in Richmond, CA, is watching for the first sign of the avian flu disease in California by operating under a program of "enhanced surveillance" for the H5N1 strain of influenza. They test respiratory samples sent in by California doctors from patients who developed flu like symptoms shortly after traveling through regions infected by the avian influenza.
