A stretch of highway melted and collapsed near the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge on April 29, 2007, after a gasoline tanker crashed and burst into flames creating intense heat. The truck's driver walked away from the scene with second-degree burns and no other injuries were reported. Officials predicted a traffic nightmare for the San Francisco Bay Area commuters for weeks to come.
